Much of the latest episode centered around the leaked draft ruling that reveals the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was first passed through the Supreme Court and made abortion legal nationwide.

Standing on stage alongside guest musician Arcade Fire, the “Doctor Strange” actor made his closing remarks in Social Goods T-Shirt, which will donate $5 from each sale to the National Institute of Reproductive Health (NIRH). “SNLCast members Mickey Day, Chloe Feynman, Alex Moffat, Kyle Mooney, Chris Reed and Cecily Strong also wore the shirt to take an activist stand during the final moments of the episode.

In a rare cold appearance as host, Cumberbatch played a native of 13th century England to mock High Court Justice Samuel Alito’s draft decision. “While I was cleaning the hole on the side of the castle where we defecate, and then falling across the sky into a ditch full of human excrement, I began to think of an abortion,” said Cumberbatch, dressed in medieval garb.

“We must make a law that will stand the test of time, even hundreds and hundreds of years from now, they will look back and say, ‘No need to update this law at all! They nailed it again in 1235.’”

The Roe v. Wade decision also surfaced during the episode’s “Weekend Update” segment, when Kate McKinnon reprise her role as Supreme Court Justice Amy Connie Barrett, whose anti-abortion stances made headlines when she was first sworn into court in 2020.
