Why the lack of updates on Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams is bad for the 49ers – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

SANTA CLARA — Coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update Tuesday on two high-profile contract issues with the 49ers.

So what exactly is going on with receiver Brandon Aiyuk and left back Trent Williams?

“There are no updates, nothing has changed,” Shanahan said.

In other words, no news is bad news for the 49ers with less than three weeks left before the start of the regular season.

Aiyuk, who was named to the AP All-Pro second team last season, remained on the 49ers’ 90-man roster. He attended the team’s preseason game at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night and watched the game from a booth on the 800th floor of the stadium.

Aiyuk is waiting for his contract to be resolved. He showed up to training camp on time to avoid fines but has yet to sign a new deal with the 49ers. NBC Sports By Area reports the 49ers have held trade talks with other teams, and have outlined deals with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.

The 49ers have also entered into trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Asked last week on KNBR why it took so long, 49ers general manager John Lynch replied, “I wish I knew. I wish I knew.”

Meanwhile, Williams has accumulated more than $3 million in fines for sticking to his three-year contract after the 2020 season.

Williams is likely to seek a new contract that replaces much of the non-guaranteed money remaining on his contract with guaranteed money. He may also seek a deal that moves him from his current spot as the sixth-highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

Williams, 36, has been selected to the Pro Bowl 11 times in his career and has been named to the first-team All-Pro three years in a row.
