A former English footballer has sparked controversy with a tweet

Former England international Trevor Sinclair has been hit with criticism across the channel after he posted and then deleted a tweet saying ‘black and brown people shouldn’t mourn the Queen’ following her disappearance. There have even been calls to fire his employer, Taxport.

Trevor Sinclair almost had to incur the wrath of a kingdom with a tweet. Minutes after Elizabeth II was reported missing on Thursday, 96, the former England international (12 caps) shared a tweet with potentially tragic consequences.

“Racism was allowed to flourish under his regime”

The former Manchester City or West Ham attacking midfielder explained in his post – before deleting it shortly afterwards – that “black and brown people should not mourn the death of the Queen because racism has been allowed to flourish during her reign”. A message that does not fail to cause a reaction on social networks, after this reaction provokes hatred and incomprehension.

Many have called for the outright dismissal of the adviser to British radio station Talksport. The latter explained that he could not be reached on Thursday evening or Friday morning. The former player’s Twitter account has also been deleted.

Former Crystal Palace owner and Sinclair’s Talksport colleague Simon Jordan immediately responded, saying his tweet was inappropriate. “Trev, I’m not sure this is an appropriate thought let alone a tweet. The country has lost a very important person and respect and worth should be the most important sentiments not division!”

Reminded by Dailymail, this isn’t the first time the former player has been in trouble with his boss. He was sacked by the BBC in 2018 after he made racist slurs at a police officer who arrested him for drink-driving.
