A Brit has finally managed to get his motorway code after 59 attempts. According to our colleagues Huffington Post This candidate will have spent a total of 1,400 pounds sterling, or approximately €1,600, and spent more than 60 hours in the exam room to pass the theory driving test.
This person has not been identified. On the other hand, we know that he took his exam in the center of Redditch, a medium-sized city located in the county of Worcestershire (England). While this case may make you laugh, it’s not really an exception in England. In the first half of 2023, many applicants will have failed the highway code test more than fifty times.
An isolated case
According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (TVSA), a man from Guildford and a driver from Tunbridge Wells must have tried their luck 55 and 53 times respectively. The resident of Hull had to try his luck 57 times.
In the UK, you pay the equivalent of €27 to take the Highway Code test. During this one-hour test, participants must answer 50 questions and get 43 out of 50 correct answers. If a candidate fails, they have to wait for three days to get the code again. The pass percentage in the examination was 44% in 2022-2023 from 65% in 2007-2008. In France, we can see a 15% drop in this ratio. In 2015, 71.5% of participants received their code, up from 56.6% in 2022.
