During the 1980s and early 1990s, it was not unusual for console manufacturers to equip their devices with expansion ports.
Taking into account future developments, these ports will (in theory) allow installed accessories and devices to increase the power of the platform; With the Super Famicom (Satellaview) and Mega Drive (Mega CD), this happened, but in the case of the NES, the expansion port on the bottom of it was never used in its entire life.
Hacker and modder RetroTime It's looking to take advantage of the port via the NES Hub, a new homebrew accessory that will provide a wide range of applications.
The NES Hub is a plug-and-play solution that will pave the way for things like four-player Bluetooth support, SNES controller support, Famicom accessory support, and the ability to play various third-party devices and add-ons.
RetroTime is looking for more beta testers to continue development of the NES Hub and admits it has only been tested on the PAL NES console so far. The price is also unknown and “depends a lot on the cost of producing the connector.”
