Goodwill received a rare gold LEGO piece, and it just sold for $18,000

The Dubois, Pa., store received. Donate a jewelry box containing something strange: a gold Bionicle mask from a popular action figure line from the early 2000s.

“We didn't know what we had when we found it,” said a representative for Goodwill of North Central Pennsylvania He told local news station WTAJ In an interview this week. “It came in a box full of random jewelry from the State College store. So it was actually processed through donations there.”

Although Bionicles were traditionally made of plastic like all other LEGO toys, the brand created extremely rare Kanohi Hau masks as giveaway prizes starting in 2001.

“We've given away 25 pieces, and five left for people who have already worked on LEGO,” said Chad Smith, an executive at Goodwill of North Central Pennsylvania. He told CBS News In an interview. “And 23 years later, one of these things has resurfaced and it's really unique.”

The one-inch-tall, 14-karat gold LEGO piece saw a starting price of $3,300. After 48 shows. The mask sold for $18,101.
