The Vikings opened their minicamp on Friday, and all eyes were on quarterback JJ McCarthy, a first-round pick who said afterward that he’s already very comfortable in Minnesota’s offense.
“It didn’t feel like my first dayMcCarthy said via ESPN. “I’ve been taking up crime for a long time now. So be able to [go] There, performance and execution, that’s fresh, but nothing was overwhelming or too much.
McCarthy impressed coach Kevin O’Connell by going to the practice field early to walk through plays on his own in preparation for running them with his teammates.
“And not because anyone asked him to,” O’Connell said. “But he’s trying to have the best day possible today and then he’s trying to do the same thing tomorrow. This guy is a process-driven guy who realizes there’s a long way to go, and that we’re just trying to make incremental gains that will be ingrained as part of the way he plays quarterback for a long time. He’s got things going.” Really liked it so far and look forward to spending another full day tomorrow.
We still have four months to go until McCarthy has a chance to show what he can do in a really important environment. But on the practice field, he doesn’t look like a rookie on day one.
