NFL: DEC 05 Ravens at Steelers

Lamar Jackson’s mystery continues with three possible explanations

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, whether he intends to or not, continues to maintain one of the biggest mysteries in the NFL. He qualifies for a huge second contract, the crows are ready to give him a contract, but he will not engage them in the negotiations.

Meanwhile, he is interrupting off-season training for the first time in his career. And there is no apparent reason for this, since the team (as mentioned above) is ready to pay the contract that it has received.

what’s going? Thursday PFT Livewe identified three possible explanations.

Possibility #1: He wants to get out of Baltimore.

Jackson denied such gossip. But until he signs a new contract with the Ravens, that remains an obvious possibility.

Possibility 2: The crows want to be offered a market position contract without the burden of negotiation.

In other words, if the current best contract is $230 million over five years with every penny fully guaranteed, Jackson might be waiting for something a little better than Deshaun Watson a necklace. (This may explain Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti’s decision to Publicly lament the Watson deal.)

Really, why wouldn’t Jackson expect a Watson deal with a local? Watson was never an NFL player. Likewise, Jackson is not currently facing 24 lawsuits (and probably counting) alleging sexual misconduct.

Possibility #3: He doesn’t know what he wants.

This seems to be the least likely, because if he was really hesitant about the future, he would have no reason to stay away from OTA sessions. In fact, he now definitely knows what to look for from crows.

It will be interesting to see if he makes it to the mandatory mini-camp next week. There is no reason to believe that he will not. However, there is no apparent reason to explain his handling of the broader business issues yet.
