Titanium iPhone 15 Pro Max loses to Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in drop test

Apple made some headlines with the launch of the iPhone 15 a few days ago. Some of the biggest upgrades offered by Apple’s new “Pro” series iPhones include a titanium build and a USB Type-C port. While the USB Type-C port on the iPhone 15 Pro turns out to be a no-brainer, its aluminum body doesn’t appear to be Titanium matches expectations for extra strength, at least in a recent drop test.

Despite its titanium body, the iPhone performed worse than the Galaxy, which has an aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection on the front and back.

After a final round of drop testing, where both phones were dropped from a higher point. The Galaxy S23 Ultra looked similar to how it did after the previous drop test, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max showed more broken glass on the front and back.

After averaging scores from all four rounds of drop testing, the Galaxy S23 Ultra won the test despite having an aluminum frame. So, there doesn’t seem to be any significant real-world benefit to having titanium, at least with Apple’s implementation.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is rumored to feature a titanium body, and hopefully it will offer better strength than the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The thing about titanium is that it’s stronger than aluminum of the same weight, but Apple used titanium to reduce the weight of the iPhone 15 Pro by 19 grams compared to its predecessor, so it wasn’t stronger anyway. In comparison, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to retain the same weight as its predecessor, so we expect to see some benefits of the rumored titanium frame compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
