My first thought when I was invited to write one of these Wordle reviews was that there must be some kind of misunderstanding. The e-mail said something about looking for “high-profile” reviewers, and at least outside the Times newsroom I’m not very popular.

Within the newsroom, my job is to manage a savvy team of versatile editors, so I assumed the gaming people had sent me the wrong note and instead meant to ask if they could manage me. release Wordle review. (As it turns out, they needed us to do that, too.) But apparently, they really wanted me—”the man of words,” as they said—to review Wordle. So here we are.

Side note before we continue: I always play on hard mode. Although I wouldn’t judge anyone else’s preference, Ordinary still felt vaguely like a betrayal to me.

It was a no-brainer which word would I begin with. I have a rotation of five or six starter words that I use, but my favorite, by far, is AUDIO.

Why the sound? Well, I like the idea of ​​starting with a four vowel word, but I’m a bit of a conformist, so I refuse to join ADIEU. Never mind that the sound is almost as popular. It was most important in my early accounts article I read before The Times acquired Wordle, which noted that there were no “borrowed words” from other languages ​​in the list of original solutions, and ruled out ADIEU as a possible answer even if it was accepted as a guess. Of course, now that Wordle has an editor, I suppose it’s possible that ADIEU might show up one day, but it’s too late now because the sound has outgrown me.

With AUDIO, I got the correct D in the third position, and luckily I left out four vowels. good start. At this point, I was reasonably confident I was looking for a word with either an E or an E and a Y. I gave a brief thought to TEDDY before tossing it aside and moving on to the more likely possibilities.

My mind went to the side of HEDGE, though I knew there were some rhymes in there and I risked getting four letters right. In hard mode, finding four letters can sometimes be fatal if there are still too many viable options for the fifth letter. Imagine the answer is STOVE and you try to STOLE while R, K and N are still in play. But today I could think of only two possible replacements for HEDGE if I missed just one letter, so I gave it a shot.

In fact, I hit exactly four letters. And on that third line, with what I was sure was a 50-50 chance, I guessed correctly.

This means that today’s Wordle is not WEDGE, the other word you might have tried. it’s ledge, According to Webster’s New World College Dictionary“shelf-like projection” or “series of protruding rocks”.
