2023 MLB Draft Day 3 Overview and Schedule

2023 MLB Draft Day 3 Overview and Schedule

The first two days and ten rounds of the 2023 draft have been completed, but the hard work that has been done to acquire potential future stars is far from over.

The third day of the draft arrives on Tuesday as part of the All-Star festivities in Seattle, and few participants in this year’s Midsummer Classic know too well the value to be found in the later rounds.

Five All-Stars of the Year were taken and fell in the 10th round or later when they first entered professional ball: Jordan Romano (10th), Nathan Ivaldi (11), Josh Hader (19), J.D. Martinez (20) and David Bednar ( 35). This is an elite starter, dominant DH and three flare arms who didn’t hear their names until much later in the process.

Are you wondering which of the latecomers might be all the stars of tomorrow? Only one way to find out for yourself.

Day 3 of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft officially begins Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET. All selections will be streamed for free on MLB.com, and there will be no delay between selections. You can also catch Rounds 11-20 on the official draft tracker and by following @employee on Twitter.

Nine of the top 10 remaining prospects come from the high school ranks, and the tenth is Witt, who pitched just 10 2/3 innings for Texas this spring when he returned from Tommy John surgery. It’s very likely that the other nine will meet their college obligations after falling so far behind, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they could be taken and signed either.

Clubs are allowed to spend up to $150,000 on players selected in Rounds 11-20 without counting it towards their bonus pool. Any raises run counter to the group, so there’s a chance that an organization with a lot of early savings will have room to add premium talent late Tuesday.

There’s also significantly less risk in trying this on day three. In the first ten rounds, the slot bonus for an unsigned player still counts towards the pool, giving clubs extra incentive to sign all of their early picks. There is no such penalty for Round 11 and beyond, so expect some big swings from clubs Tuesday even if they don’t call before the signing deadline.

All-time talent in rounds 11-20

The 11-20 rounds brought some big names to Major League Baseball Hall of Famers Andre Dawson (11th, 1975), Ryne Sandberg (20th, 1978) and Jim Thome (13th, 1989); MVPs Jose Canseco (15th, 1982), Jeff Kent (20th, 1989), Don Mattingly (19th, 1979), Dave Parker (14th, 1970) and the recently retired Albert Pujols (13th, 1999), Cy Young Award winners Orel Hershiser (17, 1979) and Brett Saberhagen (19, 1982).
