On Wednesdays, employees of Bookshili, a startup that sells books and literature-related products, give free rein to their passions. “One of my colleagues has gone back to school and another is recording a music album.Explains Louise Verity, founder of the Northampton-based company, which employs ten people. Others use this day to free themselves from administrative duties and spend more time with their children or friends during the weekend.

Bookishly is one of 61 companies taking part in a pilot project in the UK to test the four-day week. The investigation, the results of which have now been released, was overseen by Oxford, Cambridge and Boston universities, the 4-day-week community and the think-tank Autonomy. Around 3,000 employees participated between June and December 2022 in various sectors such as catering, finance, robotics and education.
