John Lynch didn’t want to trade Trey Lance to the Cowboys; Dallas made the best offer – NBC Sports Bay Area and California

Santa Clara – Of the 31 destinations that quarterback Trey Lance could have been sent to, Dallas would have been near the bottom of the 49ers list.

But that’s where the team replaced Lance with a fourth-round pick last Friday.

General Manager John Lynch will appear Thursday morning “Murph & Mac Show” on KNBR. He said he had no choice but to get the best compensation for the player who was selected by the 49ers with the #3 draft pick for 2021.

“As they say, the tie goes to the runner,” Lynch said. “The tie was going to go to someone else, but it wasn’t a tie.”

In other words, Dallas owner Jerry Jones put in a much better offer than other teams were willing to give up for Lance.

“There were two teams left in the end and I told the other teams, ‘I don’t want him to go there (Dallas),'” Lynch said. “But you know, that’s where it ended.”

A week earlier, Lynch had said he believed the “most likely” scenario was for Lance to stay with the 49ers. All that changed in a short period of time, Lynch said, as trade talks intensified as the final preseason game approached.

“It was the most likely scenario because we had opened discussions with the teams and there was no reason for us to move him,” said Lynch. “And in the next 24 hours things changed.”
