As he walks around Toulouse, Mr. The professor is recognized, greeted with respect and complicity or approached with affection by middle and high school students, students and sometimes adults who need to give him substantial improvement in English, no doubt.
On Instagram and TikTok, he has been posting short educational and very funny videos for over a year. It was the students who gave him the idea. “I don’t know much about TikTok. I did some research and looked at American teachers doing what I do now. I was fascinated by this idea, I loved it!”, Rhe says with a distinct British-Toulouse accent.
“When I saw the number of people who watched the first clips, I said to myself: I can target another audience. They can also learn, because above all, we want to send, we want to learn, the most important thing. More and more students, more people are on cell phones, looking at screens.. .read less, but we can learn something!”.
Success comes almost immediately: 1000 views, then thousands of views. “I was happy, it’s like I’m passing on my knowledge, but through networks, when you’re a teacher, don’t do it for the money, it’s a real passion! It’s innate, I can’t explain it, I love what I do 100%.
On networks, his clips full of jokes and fights with his students are striking. In a minute or so, he tackles a point of grammar, introduces a vocabulary word, banishes a false friend.
“I teach casually. I think the bond I have with the students is so important to maintain this trust and find this balance that allows me to participate well in class. I think people from the outside like me. I continue to do that. Not just my students, who are a priority, but the students.” Also for parents and those who want to start or learn things in English.
“It allows us to have a new way about English, about grammar, and it’s true that it makes us want to learn a little more, because in general, we don’t want to learn with teachers. … Finally, it’s true that we are happy, even if the students are sometimes a little tired of the lessons”, Eliot explains who Monsieur Professor happily agreed to take a selfie with.
“It allows us to put a little emphasis on our ears, Adds Adele. And then, of course, it shows us other ways of teaching, which I find very interesting. I think it will bring something new to education.”
Monsieur Professor is always greeted with respect in the street. This fame did not bother him. He cheerfully responded to selfie requests. This immediately established complicity amuses him. It’s a testament to the fact that learning can be fun and exciting, and that the exchange goes through.
“Even if I were given a billion tomorrow, I would not stop. My grandmother was a teacher, she was a school teacher. I think I was made for this job. I will not change until the state calls me … ” He tries a knowing smile.
Another passion of his is the Toulouse stadium. In all competitions Mr. The professor attends. He is also an ambassador for the club and wears red and black ties. “I love rugby. For me the stadium is the temple of rugby! I’m a subscriber, I watch the matches and especially the level Toulouse plays, it’s a real pleasure to attend all the games. It’s like a second home. I’m here!”.
His students know that Monsieur Professor is also a supporter of the England team. “They could tease me and especially when The Crunch, popular 53-10, they didn’t fail me! Then, I have to admit I teased them, so I wore the England jersey on Friday and the match was on Saturday. I want to go to this game. But EasyJet canceled the flight… Thank you! (Laughs) Otherwise I would have witnessed a carnage!”.
“Monday was hard… I had a lot of English people. “English people are sheep! It’s in philanthropy!” He finishes with twinkling eyes.
Monsieur the Professor feels torn because he has all his family in England, but he doesn’t see himself living anywhere but Toulouse. He came to France as a young man, lecturing. He continued at the University of Jean-Jacques, “A very, very good university is sometimes famous but brilliant!”. If he still supports the England team, where his entire family lives, Toulouse is the city of his heart. “It’s a real treat to be here. It’s not so big, it’s not so small. You can do everything by foot. And there’s rugby!”
