Roberto Mancini resigns as coach of the Italy national team

Roberto Mancini has confirmed his resignation as coach of the Italian national team.

The 58-year-old’s surprising decision comes during the Azzurri’s qualifying campaign for Euro 2024.

The country’s Football Association (FIGC) has confirmed that it will seek to appoint a successor as soon as possible.

The statement read: “In view of the most important matches in the qualifiers for UEFA Euro 2024, the new CT name will be announced over the next few days.

The federation announced that it had accepted the resignation of Roberto Mancini as coach of the Italian national team, which was received late yesterday evening.

Therefore, an important page in the history of the Azzurri is closing, after it opened in May 2018 and concluded with the 2023 Nations League finals.

And between that, winning Euro 2020, a victory achieved by a team where all the people were able to make a team.

Italy are next in contention for qualification with doubleheaders against North Macedonia and Ukraine in September.

Former Manchester City and Inter Milan coach Mancini led Italy to win the 2020 European Championship, but failed to lead the team to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after 18 months.

The national team had previously only missed one World Cup final, since 1958.

Only in June, Italy finished third in the Nations League finals under Mancini.

He left with a record of 39 wins, 13 draws and nine losses.
