Do the Swiss speak less English than they think?

Switzerland, the Eldorado of polyglots and the land of the best students in English. Really? This is not what EF Language School’s latest international rankings show. Aired this Sunday by SonntagsZeitung. A German-language newspaper notes that the Swiss certainly speak good English… but not as much as they think.

According to English Proficiency Index, Switzerland has a “good command” based on standardized tests taken by EF students around the world, covering the results of 2.1 million people. It ranks 29th out of 111 countries in the world, just ahead of Argentina and Hong Kong, behind Serbia and Nigeria. However, it is more difficult at the European level, where the country ranks 23rd out of 35. The European top 10 crowns the Netherlands in first place – the big winners in the world rankings too -, Austria, the Nordic countries, Belgium, Portugal and Germany.
