The level of English of the French is known to be average. According to the IPSOS survey Released in 2019, Only 21% of active French people believe that the situation is so-called “satisfactory”.. Otherwise, 50% of those questioned say they are “bad” or do not know how to speak English at all. Still, the French did not hide their faces. All of them (92%) believe that English is absolutely necessary for all areas: at work, while studying or even for travel.
Our common low level of English forces us to limit ourselves in the professional world: 1 in 10 French people say they have been turned down for a job or promotion because of the English language. However, French, known as one of the easiest languages to learn, has questioned this assertion. But why do we have so little English?
Why are we so bad at English?
The main reason is as follows: Lack of training. While watching your favorite movies and shows on TV, The latter are formally subtitled… in French. On the academic side, it is not certain that the few hours of English taught in middle and high schools will allow for continuous and evolving practice of the language.
